A sermon preached on Sunday morning September 23, 1855 by Charles Haddon Spurgeon
The New Park Street Chapel, Southwark, London.
"So the Gentiles also God has given repentance unto life Acts 11: 18.
One of the biggest obstacles has been that never exceed the Christian religion, was an inveterate prejudice that gripped the minds of his early followers. The Jewish believers, the twelve apostles, and those that Jesus Christ had called from the dispersed of Israel, were so attached to the idea that salvation was of the Jews, and that none but the disciples of Abraham, or at least circumcised, could be saved, they could not accept the idea that Jesus had come to be the Savior of all nations, and that he would be blessed all the peoples of the earth. With great difficulty they could accept that assumption, was so opposed to any Jewish education, we see them calling Peter to a council of Christians and asking, "Why have you entered the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them?" And Peter could not exonerate himself until he had referred the matter fully, and had stated that God appeared in a vision, saying, "What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common," and that the Lord commanded him to preach the Gospel to Cornelius and his household, and they were believers. After this the power of grace was so great that these Jews could not resist more, and despite all his previous education, immediately assumed the comprehensive principle of Christianity, "and glorified God, saying, So the Gentiles also God has given repentance unto life "God bless for now we are free from the constraints of Judaism, and because we are not under the constraints of a paganism which in turn has excluded Jews, but we live very near the blessed time approaches, when Jew and Gentile, slave or free, they will be one in Christ Jesus, our Head. I do not intend to dwell on this topic, but my theme today is: "repentance unto life. "I ask God to speak grace so that His word is like a sharp sword" that penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. "By" repentance unto life " I think we must understand that repentance is accompanied by spiritual life in the soul, and that ensures eternal life to anyone who possesses it. "Repentance unto life," he says, brings spiritual life, or, rather, is the first result from that life. Regrets that there are no signs of life, natural life, except because they are only effected by the power of conscience and the voice of nature speaks in men, but repentance spoken of here, is produced by the Author of life, and when it comes, it engenders such a life in the soul that those who were "dead in trespasses and sins," are revived together with Christ, those who had no spiritual receptivity, now "receive with meekness the engrafted word" those who slept in the very center of corruption, given the power to become children of God, and be near His throne. I think this is the "repentance unto life": that repentance that brings to life a dead spirit. I also said that this repentance secures eternal life for which no regrets hear about men who do not ensure the salvation of alma.Algunos preachers say that while men can repent and believe, may also fall away and perish. We do not intend to consume our time making a stop to explain his mistake now, we have often seen it before, and could have refuted all say in defense of their dogma. Consider an infinitely better repentance. Repentance of our text that is not repentance, but a "repentance unto life", a repentance which is a true sign of eternal salvation in Christ, a repentance that saves us in Jesus through this temporary state, and that when we have passed into eternity, gives us a blessing that can not be destroyed. "Repentance unto life" is the real salvation of the soul is the seed that contains all the essential elements of salvation, which protects us, and prepares us for them. On this day we pay attention, accompanied by prayer, repentance which is "life." First, I will spend a few minutes to the consideration of false repentance, secondly, I will consider the signs that characterize the true repentance, and then exalt divine charity, which is written: "So Gentiles also God has given repentance unto life "I. First, then, consider some false repentance. I'll start making this observation that under the sound frightened the Gospel is not "repentance." There are many people who when they hear a faithful gospel sermon, remain agitated and shaken. By a certain power that accompanies the Word, God testifies that Word is his own, and causes those who hear some involuntary shaking. I've seen a few people, "when the truths of Scripture have sounded from the pulpit, whose knees have trembled against each other, whose eyes have shed tears as if they were sources of water. I have witnessed the deep depression of spirit, when, as I have said some of them, were shaken to the point of not knowing how to bear the sound of the voice, it was like the terrible trumpet of Sinai, only its thundering destruction. Dear readers, you might be highly disturbed under the preaching of the Gospel, and yet could not have that "Repentance unto life." You might know what it is to be very serious and deeply affected when they attend the house of God, however, may be hardened sinners. Let me confirm this observation with an example: Paul appeared before Felix with his hands chained, and when he spoke about "justice, temperance, and the upcoming trial," it is written that "Felix trembled," and yet, by search delay, Felix is \u200b\u200bin perdition, in the midst of other people who have said "on your way this time, when you find an appropriate time I'll look." There are many people who can not attend the house of God without alarm; you know what is being scared at the thought that God will punish them, you may often have been induced to sincere emotion under the influence of the minister of God, but let me say that, nevertheless, may be discarded because they have not repented of their sins and have turned to God. Worse. It is quite possible that not only scare before the Word of God, but Agrippa could become friendly, and be "almost persuaded" to turn to Jesus Christ, and yet, have no repentance, could go further and come to desire the Gospel might say, "Oh, this Gospel is so good, I would like to receive. Ensures so happy here and so much joy in the hereafter, I wish I could call mine. "Oh, it's so good to hear this voice of God! But they could rest easy, and as a powerful text is predicated properly, could be said "I believe that is true," but must enter into the heart before they can repent. You can even fall on their knees in prayer and can be ordered with lips terrified that this is a blessing to your soul, and, after all, could I would not be a child of God. You could say as Agrippa said to Paul: "You almost persuade me to be Christian", but like Agrippa, could not pass beyond "Almost." Agrippa was "almost persuaded to be a Christian," but not "fully convinced." Now, how many of you have been "almost persuaded" and yet are not really on the way to eternal life. How often the conviction has led them to his knees and "almost" have repented, but have remained there, not really repent. "Look at that body? Died recently. Has not yet acquired the deadly pallor, its color resembles a still life. His hand is still warm, you might think he is alive, and almost seems to breathe. Everything is full: the worm barely touched it, the decay has barely presented; no foul odor. However, life has gone, there is no life there. The same applies to you: almost alive, almost have every external body that the Christian religion, but not alive. Could have a regret, but no sincere repentance. Oh, hypocrite! I warn you today that not only might feel fear until complacency by the Word of God, and yet, after all, have no "repentance unto life." Could still sink into the bottomless pit, and listen to say, "Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels." But also is still possible for men to progress even beyond that, and that positively humble themselves under the hand of God, but are complete strangers to repentance. His goodness is not like the morning cloud and early dew that fade, but after listening to the sermon, go home and do what they conceive to be the work of repentance, ie, give up some vices and follies, dress in sackcloth and very richly shed tears because of what they have done, complain to God, and yet for all that, his repentance is not repentance but passengers, and return again to his sins . Do you deny that there is such a penance? Let me tell you a case. A certain man named Ahab coveted the vineyard of his neighbor Naboth, who refused to sell at any price or make an exchange. Ahab consulted with his wife Jezebel, who hatched the plan to kill Naboth for the king to take ownership of the vineyard. After Naboth died, and Ahab had taken possession of the vineyard, the servant of the Lord met with Ahab and told him: "Have you killed and also taken possession?... Thus saith the Lord: In the same place licked dogs the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, your own blood.... I will bring evil upon thee, and take away thy posterity. " We read that Ahab was, and went softly; and the Lord said: "Because he has humbled himself before me, I bring the evil in his days." He had given a kind of mercy, but then we read in the next chapter, Ahab rebelled, and in a battle at Ramoth-Gilead, according to the servant of the Lord, was killed there, so that "the dogs licked his blood "just in the vineyard of Naboth. You too, I say, may humble before God for a while, and yet could still be slaves of their transgressions. You are afraid of damnation, but have no fear of sinning: they are afraid of hell, but not afraid of their iniquities; are afraid of being thrown into the well, but fear not harden their hearts against His commandments. Is not it true, O sinner, you have fear of hell? Not the state of your soul that troubles you, but hell. If hell were extinguished, your repentance be extinguished, if the terrors that await you were eliminated, peccaries more treacherously than before, and your heart be hardened, and would rebel against their sovereign. Do not be deceived, my brethren, at this point; Examine yourselves to see if they walk in faith, ask yourself if you have the "repentance unto life", as may humble for a while, and yet, it never repent before God. Many more advance Beyond this, and yet, fall short of grace. It might be possible confess your sins without repenting. You could approach God, and say you're a miserable, could enumerate a long list of your transgressions and sins they have committed, without a sense of horripilation of your guilt, without a spark of real hate your actions. You could confess and acknowledge your transgressions, however, feel no hatred of sin, and if not resist the sin, God's strength, if not abandon, this assumption would not regret but that looks gold paint decorative, it is not grace that really becomes the gold that supports the fire. Say could get him to confess his sins, and yet, have no regret. In addition, and then I touched the farthest thought that I give on this point. They could do some work worthy of repentance, and yet be unrepentant. Let me give a proof of this in a fact authenticated by inspiration. Judas betrayed his Lord, and after doing so, an overwhelming sense of enormous evil he had committed was upon him. His guilt buried all hope of repentance, and in the gloom of despair, but not in the pain of true remorse, confessed his sin to the chief priests, crying: "I have sinned by betraying blood innocent. "They said:" What is that to us? There you are! "Then he threw the pieces of silver in the temple, to show that he could not stand to bear the price of guilt and left them there. Went out, and was it safe?" No. "He left, and went and hanged himself. "And even then God's vengeance followed him: for when he hung fell from the height where he was suspended, and was destroyed, his soul was lost and perished. You can see what this man did. He sinned, confessed error, and returned the gold, but after that, he was a reprobate. Did not put us to shake it? can see how possible it is to be as about shadowing a Christian, that's wisdom, if only we were mortal, would be deceived. II. Now, when they had warned so many false lessons of repentance, I have the intention to occupy a short time by making some observations on true repentance, and the signs by which we discern whether we have that "repentance" which is "life" . First of all, let me correct a mistake or two that those who are coming to Jesus Christ committed frequently. One is that they often think they should experience deep, horrible and terrifying manifestations of the terrors of the law and hell before you can say that they repented. I have spoken with many people who have told me what I can only translate them in English to you, this morning, more or less this way: "I'm not sorry enough, I'm not sinful enough. I've been an offender as inexcusable and evil like many others, I almost wish I was, not because they love the sin, but since then have my deepest convictions of guilt, and I feel safer to have truly come to Jesus Christ. " Now would be a grave mistake to imagine that these terrible and horrible thoughts of an upcoming trial have something to do with the validity of "repentance." Often there are the gift of God nothing but innuendo the devil, and even where the law works and produces these thoughts should not be considered as constituting a part and parcel of "repentance." Do not fall into the essence of repentance. "Repentance" is a hatred of sin is turning away from sin and a determination, by God's strength, to quit. It is possible for a man to repent without a gruesome display of the terrors of the law might regret not having heard the sound of the trumpet of Sinai, without having heard more than a distant rumble of thunder. A man can repent entirely through the voice of mercy. God opened some hearts to faith, as in the case of Lydia. Others assaults with heavy hammer of the wrath to come, some open with the pick of grace, and others with the crowbar of law. There may be many ways of getting there, but the question is: have you got there? Are you there? It often happens that the Lord is not in the storm or the earthquake, but the "still small voice." There is another poor mistake many people make when thinking about salvation, and that is: you can not regret it enough, they imagine that if you repent to some extent, be saved. "Oh, sir!" Some of you will say, "I have enough contrition." Beloved, let me tell you no eminent degree of repentance necessary for salvation. You know that there are degrees of faith, and yet the least faith saves, there are also degrees of remorse, repentance and the minimum, if true, will save the soul. The Bible says: "He that believeth shall be saved," and when he says that includes the smallest degree of faith. Also when he says: "Repent and be converted that your sins may be blotted out," includes a man who has the lowest degree of real repentance. Repentance, moreover, is never perfect in any man in this mortal state. Never attain perfect faith that is entirely free from doubt, and never reach the repentance that is free from some hardness of heart. The most sincere penitent feel partially known unrepentant. Repentance is also a continuous act during a lifetime. Grow continuously. I believe that a Christian on his deathbed regret more bitterly than it ever did. Repentance is something to be done throughout life. Sin and repent, sin and repent, summarizes the life of a Christian. Repent and believe in Jesus, repent and believe in Jesus, forms the consummation of his happiness. They should not expect to be perfect in "repentance" before being saved. No Christian can be perfect. "Repentance" is a grace. Some people preach it as a condition of salvation. Condition of nonsense! There are no conditions for salvation. God gives salvation, and He only gives to whom He wills. He says: "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy." If, then, God has given you the least regret, and sincere repentance, praise him for it, and hoped that repentance grows deeper and deeper as you go forward. Then this observation has to be applied to all Christians. Christian men and women, you feel you do not have a sufficiently deep repentance. Feel they have a faith big enough. What have to do? Ask an increase of faith, and grow. The same is true repentance. Have you ever tried to reach a deep repentance? My friends, if you have failed in the attempt, trust in Jesus, and try every day to get a penitential spirit. Do not expect to have, I repeat, a perfect repentance at first have to be sincere contrition, and then, under the grace of God go from strength to strength, until in the end hate and hate the sin as a serpent or a viper, and then they are close, very close, the perfection of repentance. I have given these considerations, then, as the start of the topic. And now you wonder: what are the signs of true repentance in the eyes of God? First, I tell you, it is worth. No one ever repents of sin without feeling some kind of sadness at a time. It may be more or less intense, according to the way God calls them, and their previous way of life, but there must be some sadness. No matter when we arrive, but at some time or another must come, or would the repentance of a Christian. I once knew a man who professed that he had repented, and in truth his character had changed externally, but I never saw it had a real pain for sin, nor ever saw some signs of contrition in him when he professed believe in Jesus. I thought that this man was an ecstatic leap of grace, and came after he had just jumped the blame equally ecstatic again. He was not a lamb of God, not having been washed in contrition for all the people of God must be washed in contrition when converted from their sins. No one can come to Christ and know His forgiveness without feeling that sin is a hateful thing, it led to the death of Christ. You have dry eyes, your knees straight and their hearts hardened, how could they think they are saved? The gospel promises salvation only to those who really arrepienten.Sin But for not to hurt any of you, and make them feel something that is not my intention to make them feel, let me note that I do not mean to be real tears. Some men are so hard up they could not shed a tear. I met some people who have been able to sigh and moan, but the tears do not flow. Well, I say that although the tears often provide evidence of contrition, might have "repentance unto life" without them. What I want to understand is that there must be a real pain. If prayer is vocal, must be secret. To show remorse, however slight, must have a moan but not words, should be at least a sigh but no tears. This repentance must be one, I think, not only pain, but there must be something practical: it should be a practical repentance.
"not enough to say sorry, and repent, and then continue every day as ever walked." Many people are very distressed and very penitent for his past sins. Hear them speak. "Oh," they say, "I deeply regret having been a drunk one day, and I sincerely regret having fallen into this sin, I deeply regret having done that." Then they go straight home, and when it reaches one in the afternoon of Sunday was drinking again. And yet, those people says that he has repented. Do you believe them when they say they are sinners, but that does not love sin? You may not love him for a while, but could be sincere penitent, and then go and transgress again immediately, in the same way they did before? How can we believe them if they break again and again, and do not leave their sin? We know a tree by its fruit, and you who are penitent arrepentimiento.A produce works I have often seen as a very beautiful example that reflects the power of contrition, an anecdote provided by a pious minister. He had been preaching about repentance, and in the course of his sermon he spoke of sin of theft. On his way home, a worker approached him, and the Minister noted that he had something under his uniform worker. The minister said he did not go too far, but the man persisted. At last he said: "I bring a hoe on my arm that I stole on that farm, I heard him preach about the sin of theft, and I must go and put in place again." That was a sincere repentance, it motivated him to return and return the stolen item. It was the same with the islanders of the South Seas, of whom we read that stole the clothes and furniture of the missionaries, and everything else they could carry from their homes, but when they were converted savingly brought them all back. But many of you say you repent, and yet do not produce fruit, it is useless. People sincerely repent, say, of having committed a theft, or having kept a gambling house, but take care that all earnings are used in the best interest of his heart. True repentance will produce works worthy of repentance, will be a practical repentance. But we go further. You can tell if your repentance is practical by this test. Do you have time or not? Many of his regrets resemble the hectic flush of consumptive person, that is no sign of health. Many times I have seen a young man in a trance of newfound pity but little firm, and he believed he has been ready to repent of their sins. For a few hours, that person is deeply contrite before God, and for weeks waives his folly. Attend to the house of prayer, and converse in the manner of a child of God. But returning to their sins as the dog returns to its vomit. The unclean spirit has gone home, and took him seven other spirits more wicked than himself,... And the last state of that man is worse than the first. " How long did your contrition? "It lasted a few months, or you came and left suddenly? You said, "I will join the church will do this, that and the other, for God's sake. "Are your works lasting and do you think your repentance will last six months? continue for twelve months? will last until you're wrapped in your shroud? But In addition, I make one more question. Do you think that would repent of their sins, if there were not a punishment in front of you, or do not repent because they know they will be punished forever if they remain in their sins? Suppose we told them not hell exists at all, that if they wanted, they could swear, and if they wanted, they could live without God. Suppose that there were no reward for virtue, and there is no punishment for sin, what choose? Can you honestly say this morning: "I think, by the grace of God, I would choose the right though there were no reward for it, although nothing was gained by means of justice, and nothing was lost by sin ? Every sinner hate the sin when approaching the mouth of hell, every murderer hates his crime when he approached the gallows, I have never seen a child hates his fault as much as going to be punished for it. If they had no reason to fear the abyss, if they knew they could give their lives to sin, and could do so with impunity, even so, feel that they hated the sin, and could not and would not want to commit sin, but because of the weakness of the flesh? Do you still wish to holiness? Do you still want to live like Christ? If so,-if they could truthfully say that if so turn to God and hate his sin with eternal hatred, not fear because they have a "repentance" which is "life". III. Now comes the third header and the last, and is THE CHARITY OF GOD BLESSED granting men "repentance unto life." "Repentance," My dear friends, is the gift of God. It's one of those spiritual favors to ensure eternal life. It is a wonder of divine grace that not only provide the way of salvation, not only invites men to receive grace, but a positive right that men are willing to be saved. God punished His Son for our sins, and so provided salvation for all His lost children. Sends His minister, the minister calls on men to repent and believe, and strives to bring them to God. They do not want to hear the call, and despise the minister. But then another messenger is sent, a heavenly ambassador can not fail. Summons men to repent and turn to God. His thoughts are a little misguided, but after him, the Divine Spirit, argues with them, forget the kind of people they were, and will repent and return. Now what would we do if we had been treated as it was God? If we had prepared a dinner or a party, and we desired sent messengers to invite the guests to come, what would we do? Do you think that we would take the time to go visiting everywhere and make everyone come? And when he sat and said they can not eat, do open their mouths? If you still declare they can not eat, do we would eat? Oh, dear, I am inclined to think they would do that. If they had signed the invitations, and guests would not come to your party, do not say, "no party"? But what makes God? He says: "I will do a party and invite people, and if they come, my ministers will come and bring them personally. I will say to my servants go into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that can partake of the feast I have prepared. " Is not it a great act of divine mercy which effectively re-arranged? Not done through force, but uses a sweet spiritual persuasion. First are the most reluctant to be saved, "but," says God, "that's nothing, I have the power to make them turn to me and I will." The Holy Spirit to penetrate then the Word of God in the minds of His children a blessed so that they can not refuse to love Jesus more. I ask you to observe that it does not through any force against her will, but by a sweet spiritual influence voluntad.Él changing places not only a feast of good things before men, but leads them to come and participate in them, and constrains them to continue celebrating while leading to the permanent and eternal mansion. And to bring up, he tells everyone: "With eternal love I have loved you, so I drawn thee mercy. Now, I love you to me?" Oh, Lord, "" cry-"Your grace to bring here shows that you love us because we were reluctant to come. You said go, and we said we would not go, but you made us go. And now, Lord, we bless and we love you for that force. It was a divine urgency. "I was a captive who was struggling, but I was led to be willing.
" Oh, sovereign grace, submitting my heart I want to be led in triumph too, A willing captive to my Lord, To sing the honors of His Word. "Well, now, what say you? Some say," Sir, I have been trying to repent for a long time. In sorrow and affliction I have been praying and trying to believe, and doing everything I can. "I'll tell you something: I try a long time before being able to. That's not the way to achieve it. I heard the story of two men who were traveling. One of them said to another: "I do not know how to do, but it seems that you always remember your wife and family, and all they are doing at home, and gives the impression that you connect all the things you around with them, but I try to remind myself constantly, and yet I never can. " "No," replied the other, "that is precisely the reason why you can not, because you try. If you could connect with every little circumstance that we find easily remember them. In such and such time I think, now they are rising; and in such and such a time now in prayer in such and such a time are now having breakfast. In this way I have always before me. "I think the same happens with regard to" repent. "If a man says," I believe ", and tries by any means, mechanical, into repentance, it would be absurd and never make it. But the way to repent is, by the grace of God, believing, thinking and thinking about Jesus. If you saw the bloody side, the crown of thorns, tears of anguish if I had a vision of all what Christ suffered, I have no fear of stating that it was going to Him in repentance.'ll bet the reputation that I could have in spiritual things-that a man can not under the influence of the Holy Spirit of God, contemplate the cross of Christ without a broken heart. Otherwise, my heart would be different from everyone else. I have never known anyone who has thought, and looked at the cross, who has not found that the cross begat "repentance" and had faith. We look to Jesus if we are saved, and then say: "Sacrifice wonderfully, and that Jesus died to save sinners." If you want faith, you must remember that he gives it, if you want repentance, he gives it!, If you want eternal life, He gives liberally. He can force to feel your great sin, and take you to repent by the sight of the cross of Calvary, and the sound of more and deeper death shriek, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" That will engender "repentance" that you will mourn and say, "Ah, what my Savior bleed, and my Sovereign die for me?" Then beloved, if you would have "repentance," this is my best advice: look to Jesus. And may the blessed Giver of all "repentance to salvation" keep you from false regret that I have described, and give you that "repentance" that exists for life.
"Repent!, heavenly voice calls, and do not dare delay; The wretch that scorns the mandate, dies, and faces a fierce day.The sovereign eye of God, and nopasaran ignore the crimes of men, His messengers are released by doquierPara warn pecado.Los the world of sites covering all the earth Let the earth attend and theme; Listen, men of royal birth, and that his subjects heard as well! dóblense Together in His presence, and confess all his fault; Embrace the blessed Savior Now, do not minimize His gracia.Dobléguense before the trumpet sounds terrible, and the call to his court, for mercy knows the limit, and becomes vengeance there.
